Nothing like coming home and be able to reminisce and remember who you are and where you came from. Clement Nye Swift- The End of Whaling, circa 1910. Set on the banks of the Acushnet River looking towards the town of New Bedford. At the time this painting was made the American whaling industry was in rapid decline. At its peak, the whaling industry made New Bedford the wealthiest city in the world. But by 1910 smoke stacks dominated the waterfront, which were once lined with ship masts. The American whaling industry would cease just 15 years later when the John R. Manta returned to New Bedford.
