Weapons of a rebellion...a great memorial to our past. Here was the site where the French landed in 1798 to then March to Castlebar and run the English forces out of town, known now as the Races of Castlebar. The French leader General Hulbert them set up in the town and declared Castlebar the capital of the new republic of Connacht. George Moore of Moore Hall was also instated as the 1st president of the new republic. Although it only lasted a few days it was a great win for the Irish forces looking to gain back their lands. ...
