happy new year! One of my resolutions was to spend more time at animal sanctuaries, so today we went to the Big Island’s only animal sanctuary and met so many amazing creatures including this lovely lady! I was slightly scared of the ostriches because well ... they look like feathery dinosaurs but we tried to hold some lettuce up for her to come take a picture with us and she took it from me giving me the shock of a lifetime (see the 2nd photo to see the look of sheer terror on my face). still very happy to be ...
Heartbroken to read @wwf last report estimating that in only 45 YEARS, humanity has wiped out 60% of animal populations 🦒🐘🐆🦍🐋 We can not continue to ignore the impact of our current wasteful lifestyles. We need a global deal for nature and we need it NOW! - This picture was taken during our trip to Hawaii 2 years ago. We had the chance to visit @threeringranch and meet with tootsie, a very rare blond zebra. #throwbackthursday
The most amazing day at our family friends #threeringranch#exoticanimalsanctuary - honored to have the whole place to ourselves to feed, clean and learn all while standing in open spaces with rescued, wild and exotic animals. https://www.threeringranch.org
it took me a week of work to just be able to sit close to her. another week to be able to touch her. some days she's all the way crazy. but now we have some days where she gently holds my hand and picks at the skin around my fingers and waits for scratches. trying my hardest to never forget how special this is.
their mama was hit by a car and someone managed to catch four. feedings every four hours. screaming when you'd pick them up. using their razor teeth on my toes. today they went to their forever home and this one decided to nuzzle into me quietly and all the sudden everything was worth it. how is this my job.
this is calvin. he's tom as a spider monkey. old and blind. abused by his former owner to the extent of having two fingers cut off, a tail broken, in two places, and a broken jaw from a baseball bat. friendly reminder that exotics aren't pets. my job is to feed him grapes and talk to him. feeling so lucky.
#tbt to almost a year ago, when boyfriend and I had the privilege to get a private tour of Three Ring Ranch on Hawaii, led by Anne Goody who is phenomenal at communicating with animals. . . She taught us how to say hello to all kinds of animals, we got to witness how animals ranging from horses and a blonde zebra to monkeys and parrots completely accepted her as the alpha female (and therefore also accepted us since we were in her company). . . The stories about how the animals had ended up there were amazing. If ...
